ZED

2013   //   Columbus steel tubing, investment cast Sax Max steel lugs, brass, silver.

Zed is a custom lugged-steel bicycle. It is designed to my favorite personal geometry and made for Roubaix road riding or cyclocross. I silver-brazed the frame with Columbus tubing and Richard Sach’s custom lugs, and hand-painted detailing over a black powder coat.

If you are interested in working on a custom bike together, please drop me a line.

Zed relies the same traditional lugged construction that dominated frame building for over a century. This method was only out-moded at the highest levels of competitive cycling in the last twenty years or so by TIG welding steel, aluminum, and molded carbon fiber bike designs. Zed hybridizes this classic style of bike frame building with contemporary features that like mechanical disc brakes and internally routed cables. These modern elements serve by contrast as a tribute continued relevance of the time-tested silver brazing.

Zed weighs in at about 18lbs, including custom-built steel fork, and hand-built 28/32-spoke wheels laced to White Industries hubs.
