Chair and stool

Miranda is an ongoing collaboration with Sylvan Ray, a furniture design studio based in Bend, Oregon. Lead designer, Matthew Sellens, and I have worked closely together on a series of organic, sculptural furniture pieces that hybridize traditional craft techniques with modern manufacturing methods.
In our process, we take hand-sculpted forms carved by Matthew in his shop in Bend through a 3D scanning process that yields a mesh file to capture the sensual and subtle surfaces he has created. Matthew and I work closely during his design process, both discussing aesthetics and applying our intuition of materials, mechanical limitations, and manufacturing constraints to optimize the design. Once a finished piece has been carved, I translate this final design into a solid model assembly that is ready for CNC manufacturing by separating the complex surface into a series of individual components. This requires a deft touch to maintain his seamless style and create a strong joint.. As well as minimizing material waste and machining time.
The biggest challenges in this process were to figure out good ways to design parts for manufacturing that would yield beautiful aesthetic results with minimal machining time. This required not only making smart design choices, but considering how to design parts with robust, fast fixturing in mind. We went through a couple different design iterations on the placement and style of the joints, and then began building the first prototypes on custom-milled MDF fixtures for 3+2 CNC milling. After some small tweaks, we were able to move the designs into production with Munson Furniture, in Oakland, CA, where they are now being made-to-order.
